BOOKS Martha Ackleburg FREE WOMEN OF SPAIN Cowards dont make history; and the women of Mujeres Libres (Free Women) were no cowards. Courageous enough to create revolutionary change in their daily lives, they mobilised over 20,000 women into an organised network during the Spanish Revolution to strive for community, education, and equality for women and the emancipation of all. Militants in the anarcho-syndicalist CNT union, Mujeres Libres struggled both against fascism, the state, and reaction; and the less than supportive attitudes and concerns of some of their male comrades. Martha Ackelsberg writes a comprehensive study of Mujeres Libres, intertwining interviews with the women themselves and analysis connecting them with modern feminist movements. 17.50 / £12.00 Andy Anderson HUNGARY 1956 Superb history of the revolution and the workers councils. 8.95 / £5.95 Piotr Arshinov HISTORY OF THE MAKHNOVIST MOVEMENT A first-hand account of this little known episode of the Russian Revolution. From 1918-21, fighting off both the Red and White Armies, the anarchist Revolutionary Insurrectionary Army defended free soviets and liberty in the Ukraine. Written in 1921, the author was part of the movement itself. 14.25 / £9.90 Paul Avrich THE MODERN SCHOOL MOVEMENT Between 1910 and 1960 anarchists in the US established more than twenty schools. These were the Modern Schools - where children could study in an atmosphere of freedom and self-reliance, in contrast to the discipline of the traditional classroom. Participants included Emma Goldman, Margaret Sanger and Alexander Berkman. Includes interviews with surviving Modern School students. 21.00 / £13.95 Michael Bakunin (ed. Sam Dolgoff) BAKUNIN ON ANARCHISM Selection of his writings brought together in this collection for the general reader and student. Bakunin was one of the leading thinkers of anarchism and one of the most important practitioners of social revolution. 16.00 / 10.99 Michael Bakunin MARXISM, FREEDOM AND THE STATE Extracts from several of his writings, including his differences with Marx about the nature of the State. 5.50 / £4.20 Brian Morris BAKUNIN: THE PHILOSOPHY OF FREEDOM Morris illustrates the fundamental idea within the anarchist tradition, one that was most eloquently expressed by Bakunin: I am a fanatic lover of liberty, considering it as the unique condition under which intelligence, dignity and human happiness can develop and grow the only kind of liberty that is worthy of the name, liberty that consists in the full development of all the material, intellectual and moral powers that are latent in each person. An exceptional historical biography of a man whose political philosophy epitomises the anarchist tradition. 19.00 / £12.99 Alexander Berkman THE ABC OF ANARCHISM The book that answers the questions you always wanted to ask: is anarchism violent, can we live without government, how can anarchist society be organised, who can change society, is a revolution necessary 6.25 / £4.90 Alexander Berkman WHAT IS ANARCHISM In a clear, easily understandable conversation with the reader, Berkman discusses the major details of Anarchist thought: the myths about anarchism, society as it now exists, the need for revolution, the methods of bringing it about and how to prepare for the equitable future. This edition reunites the text previously available as ABC of Anarchism and What is Communist Anarchism. 14.50 / £10.00 Murray Bookchin, Graham Purchase, Brian Morris and Rodney Aitchtey DEEP ECOLOGY AND ANARCHISM: A POLEMIC Essays on Technology, Primitivism, Ecology and Anarchism. 4.75 / £3.50 Maurice Brinton THE BOLSHEVIKS AND WORKERS CONTROL A very detailed work that sets out to discover what workers control really is, and why the Bolsheviks were hostile to it. A day-by-day account of how they systematically suppressed factory committees and stripped the soviets (councils of delegates) of their independence and ability to act in ways not approved by the Bolsheviks. 8.00 / £5.49 Maurice Brinton FOR WORKERS POWER Includes writing on topics ranging from the Paris Commune to Paris 1968, via Wilhelm Reich, the Portuguese Revolution, The Irrational in Politics, The Belgian General Strike of 1960, The Bolsheviks and Workers Control and of course, the work of Paul Cardan/Cornelius Castoriadis. From the workplace, to the streets, to the bedroom, Brinton writes critically and honestly on the nuts and bolts of a free humanity, laying to rest the arguments against a genuinely libertarian socialism. 17.50 / £12.00 Noam Chomsky CHOMSKY ON ANARCHISM We all know what Chomsky is against. His scathing analysis of everything thats wrong with our society reaches more and more people every day. His brilliant critiques of among other things capitalism, imperialism, domestic repression and government propaganda, have become mini-publishing industries unto themselves. But, in this flood of publishing and republishing, very little ever gets said about what exactly Chomsky stands for, his own personal politics, his vision of the future. Not, that is, until Chomsky on Anarchism, a groundbreaking new book that shows a different side of this best-selling author: the anarchist principles that have guided him since he was a teenager. 16.00 / £10.99 Noam Chomsky RADICAL PRIORITIES Provides relatively easy access to Chomskys libertarian philosophy and political analysis. Taken from a wide variety of sources, many never widely published - some never in a book at all and spanning four decades, the reader is furnished with a truly comprehensive window into Chomskys anarchist convictions. 16.00 / £10.00 Noam Chomsky KEEPING THE RABBLE IN LINE Interviews with Chomsky on gun control, fascism, human rights, the democracy deficit, global warming, free trade, and more. 16.00 / £10.00 Noam Chomsky LETTERS FROM LEXINGTON The role of the media in justifying government and big business actions. An indispensable antidote to the mainstream media. 12.50 / £8.30 Frank Fernandez CUBAN ANARCHISM Anarchism was the driving force behind Cuba's revolutionary and trade union movements from their dawn until well into the 20th century. Anarchists bore primary responsibility for organising workers in Cuba's most important industries, tobacco and sugar. At the height of their influence, Cuba's anarchists controlled the union movement, provided free non-religious schools for poor children, provided meeting places for Cuba's working class, organised campesinos into unions and agricultural collectives, and published newspapers and magazines across the island. Later, they would take an active part in the resistance to the Machado, Batista, and Castro dictatorships. This book presents their inspiring story. 12.95 / £8.50 Joao Freire FREEDOM FIGHTERS: ANARCHIST INTELLECTUALS, WORKERS, PEASANTS AND SOLDIERS IN PORTUGALS HISTORY This fascinating history is traced from the beginning of the 20th century through the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War. The role of the anarchists during Salazers dictatorship is examined with much previously unknown documentation. Of particular interest is the history of the anarchists during the 1974 Carnation Revolution and during Portugals emergence as a contemporary liberal democracy. 21.50 / £15.00 Robert Graham ANARCHISM: VOLUME 1 [300CE TO 1939] Robert Graham is an outstanding scholar of anarchism and has made an exceptionally stimulating choice of texts: some familiar, others- especially those from East Asia - entirely unknown to me. David Goodway, Anarchist Historian, University of Leeds Will definitely meet the need for a comprehensive study of all the strands, ideas and themes of anarchist and libertarian thought. Stuart Christie, Anarchist Writer/Publisher 29.00 / £19.99 Daniel Guerin ANARCHISM An excellent introduction to anarchism covering topics as diverse as the State, democracy, trade unions, how will public services be managed after the revolution; and a look at anarchism in Italy, Russia and Spain. Introduction by Noam Chomsky. 13.00 / £10.99 Daniel Guerin (ed) NO GODS, NO MASTERS Originally printed in French in four volumes, Guérins monumental work is now in print in a single book. It s a hefty tome, including writing from Malatesta, Souchy, Voline, Makhno, Durruti, Goldman - in short everybody you would expect and many more besides. Collected by writer and by subject (Spanish Civil War, for example, or Kronstadt) it a great, fully annotated collection, ably translated by Paul Sharkey. 24.50 / £16.95 Peter Kropotkin FIELDS, FACTORIES AND WORKSHOPS TOMORROW The Russian anarchist does some crystal ball gazing as he tries to see how things would work in an anarchist society. 12.50 / £9.50 Peter Kropotkin ACT FOR YOURSELVES A collection of short and easy to read articles. 9.65 / £7.00 Peter Kropotkin THE CONQUEST OF BREAD The economics of a free society. How we might feed, clothe and house ourselves without bosses or government. 7.50 / £4.95 Peter Kropotkin MUTUAL AID His most influential book. Kropotkin shows that co-operation is as important as competition, and uses many examples from nature. 14.50 / £10.00 Peter Kropotkin MEMOIRS OF A REVOLUTIONIST Peter Kropotkin (1842-1921) was born into the highest rank of the Russian aristocracy. This fascinating account of his dramatic conversion from prince to anarchist is more than an autobiography; it is an extraordinary portrait of the old Russia, both before and after the liberation of the serfs. Memoirs is also a study of the early anarchist movement in Western Europe, in which Kropotkin played a part after his escape from a Russian prison thereby earning a second imprisonment, this time in France. 17.50 / £11.99 Ricardo Flores Magon DREAMS OF FREEDOM: A RICARDO FLORES MAGON READER Chunky volume of Magons writing on a wide range of topics - class war, feminism, racism and expropriation to name a few - alongside letters, maps, illustrations, chronology and bibliography. Along with Emiliano Zapata, Magon is regarded as one of the most important figures of the Mexican Revolution. Through his newspaper Regeneracion he boldly criticized the countrys military dictatorship and worked to build the popular movement that eventually overthrew it. 17.80 / £12.00 Ricardo Flores Magon LAND AND LIBERTY Documents the influence of anarchist ideas in the Mexican Revolution, by Ricardo Flores Magon. 11.50 / £7.95 Nestor Makhno THE STRUGGLE AGAINST THE STATE Makhno was a committed anarchist who had spent years in the Tsars jails. Released by the February Revolution he returned home to Gulyai-Polye and threw himself into organising trade unions, collectivesand soviets. During the civil war he was the leader of a workers and peasants army in the Ukraine, which saved the Red Army from military defeat at the hands of the Whites. When the White threat had been dealt with the Bolsheviks turned on the anarchists and eventually defeated them. From his Paris exile in the 1920s Makhno wrote these articles dealing with the Russian Revolution, the insurgency in the Ukraine, the national question, anti-Semitism, the Kronstadt revolt, the Bolshevik dictatorship, soviet power, and anarchism. 12.50 / £7.95 Errico Malatesta THE ANARCHIST REVOLUTION A complement to His Life And Ideas, much of it previously unpublished. As fresh today as when it was written. 7.20 / £4.50 Errico Malatesta ANARCHY A short introduction to a big idea. 5.25 / £3.50 Errico Malatesta AT THE CAFE While Malatesta was hiding from the police he regularly went to a cafe in Ancona, Italy. He had shaved off his usual beard but he was still taking a risk. Especially as this wasnt an anarchist cafe, but had a variety of customers including the local policeman. The conversations he had in this café became the basis for the dialogues that make up this book. For the first time in English, Malatesta, in his usual commonsense and matter-of-fact style, sets out and critically analyses the arguments for and against anarchism. Translated by Paul Nursey-Bray, this is a classic defence of anarchism that anticipates the rise of nationalism, fascism and Stalinism. 10.80 / £7.50 G P Maximoff THE GUILLOTINE AT WORK A Russian anarchist takes a critical look at the Russian revolution and Lenins role in suppressing the peoples free initiative and creating the foundations of dictatorship that Stalin was to later complete. 7.50 / £5.00 Brian Morris BAKUNIN: THE PHILOSOPHY OF FREEDOM Michael Bakunin never produced a systematic collection of his ideas in the manner of Marx, but his philosophy is by no means incoherent, and he fully deserves to be recognised as an important and influential political theorist. This is the first major English language attempt to do the man and his ideas such justice. 16.00 / £12.99 Peter Newell ZAPATA OF MEXICO Very nice new edition of the classic book on Zapata, with illustrations throughout. Zapata was the leading figure of the Mexican Revolution of 1910. He fought for the rights of local communities against greedy landlords, treacherous politicians and foreign-owned companies (how little things change...). Under the slogan "Land and Liberty" he became the purest embodiment of the Mexican Revolution 14.50 / £9.50 Graham Purchase ANARCHISM AND ECOLOGY When the first coloured pictures of Earth from space were broadcast many people, perhaps for the first time in all of human history, realised the truly global nature of human existence. We began to see that we were stranded in a vast universe unknown and unexplored, in which there is no certainty of encountering any other form of intelligent life or of finding another planet on which our species could conveniently live, yet we continue to respond to our environment as though it was dispensable. This book outlines the history of our slow alienation from environment, and proposes some visionary and yet practical solutions to the global ecological crisis. 20.00 / £13.99 Graham Purchase EVOLUTION AND REVOLUTION A look at the life and ideas of Peter Kropotkin. One of the ablest and most influential anarchist theoreticians of his time, Kropotkin advocated complete social reorganisation based on mutual aid, individual liberty through free co-operation, and solidarity. Purchase shows how Kropotkins ideas are still very relevant today. 6.50 / £4.30 Graham Purchase ANARCHISM AND ENVIRONMENTAL SURVIVAL A wide ranging collection of essays which graphically demonstrate the relation of classical libertarian thought to ecological issues - including labour organising and technology. 13.00 / £8.95 Jose Peirats ANARCHISTS IN THE SPANISH REVOLUTION The first 100 pages are a brief survey of the working class movement going back to the founding of the Spanish section of the First International in 1869, and the struggles that were a prelude to the events of 1936-1939. The rest of the book is taken up with a comprehensive, critical history of the Spanish civil war and the role played by the anarchists. 19.00 / £12.50 Richard Porton FILM AND THE ANARCHIST IMAGINATION A survey of anarchism in film - from crude bosses propaganda with its stereotypes of bearded bomb throwers to Ken Loachs Land and Freedom. 22.00 / £14.00 Milan Rai CHOMSKYS POLITICS A full-length survey of Chomsky's political life and writing. The picture of his political philosophy this book provides is a useful one, focusing especially on his assault on journalism's self-censorship and corporate control of the mass media. 17.75 / £12.00 Rudolf Rocker NATIONALISM AND CULTURE Rocker dissects the national state to show how historically it has stifled cultural progress and is reactionary in nature. He traces the evolution of nationalism, and the creation of a centralised state with the race theory as its base, to its logical conclusion in Nazi Germany. Also examined is the use of religion by kings and rulers as a tool in the exploitation of their subjects and the use of state power by religious leaders to cement their control. Rockers style is lively and enjoyable. This book is a treasure of free thought in an era of extreme persecution (originally published in exile shortly after Hitlers rise to power) and demonstrates that if people are ever going to achieve freedom and the flowering of culture it is going to be at the expense of the State. 2.50 / £15.00 Diego Abad de Santillan AFTER THE REVOLUTION Anarchism and the economics of workers control. Written during the Spanish revolution by a participant. 12.50 / £8.95 Augustin Souchy, Jose Peirats, Burnett Bolloten, Emma Goldman THE MAYDAYS IN BARCELONA 1937 In May 1937 workers in Barcelona members of the CNT and the anti-Stalinist Marxists of the POUM responded to the provocations of the republican police, backed by the Catalan republicans and the Communist Party, by seizing the city. These are eye-witness accounts of the events that raised the question of state power or workers power. 10.50 / £7.00 Alexander Skirda FACING THE ENEMY: A HISTORY OF ANARCHIST ORGANIATION Drawing on decades of research, Skirda is able to trace the history of Anarchism as a political movement and ideology across the 19th and 20th centuries. He offers biting and incisive portraits of the major thinkers and organisers and of their oppositionlike the Paris chief of police who organized undercover anarchist bombers in an attempt to infiltrate and discredit the movement. Skirda argues that the core problem for anarchists has been to create a revolutionary movement and envision a future society in which the autonomy of the individual is not compromised by the need to take collective action. How anarchists have grappled with that question in theory and in practice make up the core of the book. 19.00 / £12.00 Alexander Skirda ANARCHYS COSSACK The phenomenal life of Ukrainian peasant Nestor Makhno (18881934) provides the framework for this breakneck account of the downfall of the tsarist empire and the civil war that convulsed and bloodied Russia between 1917 and 1921. As in many of historys chivalric tales, clashes were fought through lightning cavalry charges and bitter hand-to-hand, saber-wielding combat. The combatants were drawn from several camps: Budyennys Red cavalry, the Don Cossacks and Kuban Cossacks (allied with the Whites), Ukrainian nationalists, and Makhnovist anarchist partisans. Mahkno and his people were fighting for a society without masters or slaves, with neither rich nor poor. They acted towards that ideal by establishing free soviets. Unlike the soviets drained of all significance by the dictatorship of a one-party State, the free soviets became the grassroots organs of a direct democracy - a living embodiment of the free society - until they were betrayed, and smashed, by the Red Army. 19.00 / £13.00 Joel Spring A PRIMER OF LIBERTARIAN EDUCATION An introduction to alternative education. 9.00 / £5.99 L Tift and D Sullivan THE STRUGGLE TO BE HUMAN, CRIME CRIMINOLOGY AND ANARCHISM Crime, punishment and social harms examined from a libertarian perspective. But, for all that, Portugal has a long tradition of libertarian organisation. This pamphlet uncovers that hidden history. 4.50 / £3.00 Noam Chomsky CHOMSKY ON ANARCHISM Noam Chomskys interview with Irish anarchists on Anarchism, Marxism and hope for the future, alongside his Notes on Anarchism. 1.90 / £1.25 John Crump THE ANARCHIST MOVEMENT IN JAPAN A short history of the anarchist movement in Japan from 1906 to the present. 2.75 / £1.80 Uri Davis ON ZIONISM AND JEWISH IDENTITY Jewish identity, who is a Jew and what being Jewish is all about, from the anti-Zionist Palestinian Jewish scholar. 2.25 / £1.50 Dawn Collective (editors) UNDER THE YOKE OF THE STATE Anarchist responses to prisons and crime, 1886-1929. Examines the anarchist alternative. 2.50 / £2.00 Louis Fabbri BOUGEOISE INFLUENCES ON ANARCHISM Why anarchism is not violence, chaos or mindless revolt; and where such misconceptions came from. They swore never to desist in our efforts until we had subverted the authority of England over our country and asserted our independence. Three years later 100,000 rose against Britain in the first Irish republican insurrection. The author examines what they were fighting for and how they influenced modern Irish nationalism. 0.60 / £0.40 Andrew Flood CIVILISATION, PRIMITIVISM AND ANARCHISM Does primitivism and its generalised critique of civilisation offer any sort of realistic alternative to the world as it is. 0.50 / £0.35 George Fontenis MANIFESTO OF LIBERTARIAN COMMUNISM This pamphlet has become a key work for revolutionary anarchists. How we could change the world. 1.20 / £0.80 George Fontenis THE REVOLUTIONARY MESSAGE OF THE FRIENDS OF DURRUTI Spanish anarchists who refused to wait until the war has been won to carry out the revolution, they believed that one couldnt be dissociated from the other. And they affirmed that without a revolutionary theory revolutions cannot come from below, and that the revolution of 19 July 1936 failed for want of a programme derived from such a theory. 2.00 / £1.30 The Friends of Durruti TOWARDS A FRESH REVOLUTION An excellent assessment of why workers power and liberty were not won in Spain in 1936/37. LIBERTARIAN ANTI-MILITARISM THEN AND NOW This pamphlet presents 110 years of anti-militarist propaganda, from Spains last imperialist adventure in 1893, through the First World War right up to the War on Terror. It includes Randolph Bournes classic analysis of why war is the health of the state. Libertarians have opposed the armed forces as the ultimate prop of the state, a pool of scab labour and the place where the authority principle (orders, not logic) runs rampant. Anarchists have always argued that the alternative to dying for our leaders is fighting for a new world. Theres a brief glimpse of how this looks in practice, from the UkrainesMakhnovist insurgents to Spains revolutionary militias. 3.20 / £2.00 Anna Key (editor) MAYDAY AND ANARCHISM: REMEMBRANCE AND RESISTANCE FROM HAYMARKET TO NOW Mayday commemorates the Haymarket Martyrs of Chicago who were framed and executed for their anarchist ideas and fighting for the eight hour day. ESSAYS ON ANARCHISM IN BRAZIL Emigration was one of the great dreams of nineteenth century European workers, and Brazil was just one of the New Worlds which took them, and showed them that the promise of such promised lands was easily broken. But the anarchist dream of freedom and revolution came with them, and workers Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian and Brazilian fought to make it a reality. And it was not only rampant capitalism they had to fight, but also state-worshippers, both Left and Right. This pamphlet contains an outline of the history of the anarchist movement in Brazil to the present day and records some of the figures who made it what it was. 3.00 / £2.00 Paul Sharkey A CHRONOLOGY OF THE FRIENDS OF DURRUTI A short history of the Friends of Durruti, which goes well with the Towards A Fresh Revolution pamphlet above. 0.80 / £0.60 Dermot Sreenan CUBA: SOCIALIST PARADISE OR CASTROS FIEFDOM?
