Judge Rules that Abortion Law is Incompatible With Human Rights in N. Ireland

Date:

The Belfast High Court has ruled that the North's abortion ban is in breach of Human Rights Law.

This is the judgment on the case brought forward by the Human Rights Commission to allow for abortion in the cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormalities.

Mr Justice Horner maintained that those who were the victims of sexual crime and cases of fatal foetal abnormalities were entitled to exemptions in the law. This could mean that the abortion law will be changed to allow those who fit that criteria to avail of abortion services in the Six Counties.

We will have more on this story later this evening, for now, however, we maintain that the fight is not over. We will continue to fight for free, safe and legal abortion on demand, as early as possible as late as necessary.
